Pete Philly & Perquisite stand for very versatile, relaxed and melodious hip-hop. The quiet, introvert producer-cellist Perquisite and the outgoing, exuberant rapper Pete Philly, who is known for his fluent articulation and unhurried phrasing, make for a highly fresh fusion of hip-hop with jazz, soul and other styles. The duo got together in 2002 after they had both been around on the Dutch hip-hop and dance music scene for a while. In 2005 their debut album Mindstate was released, a remarkable masterpiece that portrays different states of mind in every song. The song Insomnia was one of the most powerful tracks: Pete Philly raps languidly and tiredly about his lack of sleep and the madness that overtakes him. The two have won several prizes: an Essent Award, a Live XS Award and a Zilveren Harp in 2006. On their new album Mystery Repeats they have included world beat and elements from classical music in their songs alongside jazz and soul.
