Alto saxophonist Maceo Parker once provided a vital element of the driving beat that propelled James Brown across the stage. He also worked on the alternative funk style of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. At the same time, Parker was building a solo career and he released many albums under his own name. The majority of these albums were swinging and energetic. Parker had learned a great deal from his famous band leaders. The double CD Roots & Grooves with the WDR Big Band was the next milestone in his career. On this album Parker placed his funk in a setting in which his uplifting music takes on even more color. The first disc is a tribute to Ray Charles. Parker's voice - yes, he sings too - is extremely reminiscent of Charles'. On the second, undiluted funk disc, you can hear that Parker has lost nothing of his edge.
