When they were founded some ten years ago, Galactic was an instrumental band following the tradition of The Meters, The J.B.'s and Booker T & The MG's, bands that accompany vocalists just as easily as they play their own repertoire. The group was founded by Stanton Moore, one of the most important "2nd-line drummers" of this day and age, a typical New Orleans-style of drumming. Moore is versatile drummer, who doesn't only excel in funk but can also stand out with traditional bands like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. His experience with rappers and vocalists led to the album From the Corner to the Block, a CD for which Galactic invited a whole bunch of MCs. The featured rapper Lyrics Born who recently released the album Everywhere at Once with his live band, is acclaimed for his complex and socially involved rap style. Boots Riley, who forms the duo The Coup together with DJ Pam the Funkstress is a Marxist rapper who doesn't exactly mince his words in his radical texts.
