Freddy Cole spent many years emerging from the shadow of his immensely popular older brother Nat 'King' Cole, who died in 1965. Like Nat, Freddy performs with acoustic bass and guitar and he croons his songs from behind the piano. But Cole does not believe he needs to apologize for having the same act as his brother had. Over the years he has developed a clear style of his own. His voice is huskier, smokier and even jazzier. His timing seems more inspired by Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday than by 'King' Cole. Alongside guitarist Randy Napoleon and bassist Elias Bailey, Cole is supported by drummer Curtis Boyd, so that in terms of instrumentation he has moved even further away from the unforgettable sound of his legendary brother. Freddy Cole has recorded a respectable number of albums and was nominated for a Grammy for the CD Merry Go Round.
