The student bands honor the big band tradition. We always welcome the best of these student orchestras to our festival; their quality is really high, as is their dedication. They play with so much enthusiasm. Many jazz artists started their careers in student big bands (for instance: Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis). Each year the Monterey Jazz Festival invites young and talented jazz students from all over the US and the rest of the world to take part in the Next Generation Festival. After a stringent selection procedure only the very talented are allowed to take part in The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Subsequently, a number of difficult big band pieces are rehearsed with the young orchestra under the guidance of an experienced band leader. This is how the Monterey Jazz Festival shows its involvement in jazz education and the development of jazz talent. The average age of the musicians is 18. The youngest soloist is 16-year-old trumpeter Nick Frenay, who - despite his youth - has been studying his instrument for ten years now and is heading toward a great musical career.
