The Kindred Spirits Ensemble from Amsterdam is a string quartet and choir enforced jazz band. The ensemble's motor is DJ KC The Funkaholic, the man who also founded the eponymous record label and who's in charge of various club nights and concerts in the Amsterdam Paradiso. The Kindred Spirits Ensemble draws from the rich musical tradition of spiritual jazz and presents songs by Leon Thomas, Pharoah Sanders, Andrew Hill and Mos Def. Next to standard renditions they've written some new arrangements. Last year the group paid tribute to John Coltrane by performing an unabridged version of his magnum opus A Love Supreme from 1965. This is the album on which Coltrane presents himself as the prophet who has seen the light, as can be heard on For JC, Love is Supreme, released on Free Spirits, the spiritual jazz branch of the Kindred Spirits label.
