Like no other singer Yasmin Levy is working on the conservation of a culture and a language that almost got lost. She has taken pity on the musical heritage of the Sephardic Jews and their language - Ladino. In doing so, she's following the example of her late father, who was head of the Ladino department of the national radio of Israel. In that function he collected the songs of the Sephardic Jews that had been passed down orally from generation to generation over a period of 500 years. During the preparation of Romance and Yasmin, her first album, she was enormously helped by the books and recordings her father had left behind. On her second CD La Juderia she goes further back to the roots of Ladino. The ancestors of the Sephardic Jews mainly lived in Spain and Portugal and Ladino is a language derived from the Spanish language. In Yasmin Levy's music this Spanish influence is strongly present: in La Juderia flamenco can be clearly heard.
