In the mid-sixties reedman Willem Breuker and drummer Han Bennink played a lot of gigs together. They decided to spread their music by means of a self-released album. The label read ICP 001. The name of an orchestra, which nowadays is praised all over the world, was born: the Instant Composers Pool (ICP). Soon after that pianist Misha Mengelberg invited himself to become a member and in the years to follow the collective performed in varying line-ups. Although Breuker left the orchestra in the seventies, the ICP still exists and isn't only famous for its internationally praised programs featuring the music of Herbie Nichols, Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington, but also for its high quality and wholly unique improvisations.
