Saxophonist Joshua Redman had been in two minds for a long time: would he become a doctor or study law? After graduating from Harvard in '91 he won the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition and immediately all eyes were on him. The media embraced him as the new jazz cat in town and all plans for a continuation of his studies were called off. After the hype the American stood his ground and released some great recordings in various line-ups. But never had he ventured to record in one of the hardest jazz formats: the trio. Up to now, that is, because recently his eleventh recording and first trio-album was released: Back East. As a challenge to himself he, inspired by Sonny Rollins' Way Out West from 1957, performs with three different rhythm sections.
