In The Netherlands we got to know her when she opened up for Joe Jackson during his European tour. Singer-songwriter Sonya Kitchell is clearly getting more popular with her Joni Mitchell and Carole King influenced songs. She presents pretty pop songs with jazz, blues and folk elements, in a voice that is reminiscent of the sound of fellow young singers like Joss Stone and Norah Jones. Only eighteen years old, she may be a young debutant in showbiz, but her beautiful CD Words Came Back to Me surpasses all age limits. Kitchell, the daughter of a painter (father) and a graphic designer (mother) started composing at a young age and took singing lessons with vocalists Sheila Jordan and Rebecca Paris. She won the 'best composition' prize at the DownBeat Student Music Awards 2003.
