For her latest project the charismatic vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater set out on a search for her African roots. She traveled through Mali and felt an ever tightening bond with the Malinese blues and its players. 'It felt like a home-coming', the singer stated. On the CD Red Earth, named after Mali's red colored soil, she mingles her jazz with Malinese voices, music and traditional instruments. Bridgewater is a spirited performer with a great sense of drama and a beautiful voice. In '71 she started out as the vocalist of one of the best jazz orchestras in the world: the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band. Later she shared the stage with the best jazz musicians including Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach. She also made a name for herself as a theater star in several hit musicals. She recorded several CD's paying tribute to the music of Horace Silver, Ella Fitzgerald and Kurt Weill.
