The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra originated from the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band, an orchestra that since '66 has performed in the jazz club The Village Vanguard every Monday night - the night that in principle all musicians are off duty. After Jones had unexpectedly moved to Europe to stay there permanently, and after Lewis had passed away, the orchestra continued to exist although under a different name. At first the orchestra was a real all star band. Later it became a breeding ground for new talent. Over the years the orchestra has played pieces of among others Thad Jones, Slide Hampton and Jim McNeely. After a period of forty years The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is still one of the world's best big bands.
