Trumpet player Eric Vloeimans and contemporaries like pianist Michiel Borstlap, saxophonists Yuri Honing and Benjamin Herman and bassist Tony Overwater, have always shirked musical conventions. Vloeimans, who in 2002 won the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize 2001 and the Bird Award 'Artist Deserving Wider Recognition', is always looking for adventure. After various acoustic explorations, he and his band Gatecrash have set out to reconnoiter the electronic path. He mixes his lyrical, velveteen tone with Fender Rhodes and grooving drums that balances between subtle and phenomenal. The CD Gatecrashin', recorded live last year at the Rotterdam club Lantaren/Venster, the energy of the intuitive playing of Vloeimans, keyboardist Jeroen van Vliet, bassist Gulli Gudmundsson and drummer Jasper van Hulten is palpable. A breathtaking trip!
