Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and
Wynton Marsalis will play compositions –a.o. from Marsalis’ own hand—that are inspired by trains. Different from the concert of Saturday, it will not specifically focus on the oeuvre of a jazz legend but it will play music that was written for the orchestra only recently, showing us a completely other side of the orchestra and Wynton Marsalis himself. Some of the songs will come from Marsalis’ album
Big Train (1999), which was another extensive work shortly following the marathon suite
Blood on the Fields (1997) that was the first piece of jazz to ever win the prestigious Pulitzer Price for composition. Herewith establishing yet another component of the musician Marsalis: Not only is he a trumpet-player of yet legendary status, but also a composer who is working hard on an oeuvre coming from the tradition, but with the strong musical signature of the all-round musician Wynton Marsalis is today.
