Anyone who has ever seen David Sanborn perform, knows that this alto player doesn't like flirting: his soul piercing tone is too straightforward for that. Many of us, whether they know it or not, must have heard Sanborn play at some time or other. He's the man playing the solo in David Bowie's Young Americans and he also made his sax howl on albums of James Taylor or Stevie Wonder. It was far from self-evident that this enormously popular funk and fusion musician would develop such a powerful voice in the world of music. As a child he suffered from polio and had breathing difficulties. The saxophone proved to be a good therapy. His funky masterpiece Voyeur won him a Grammy and with his album Another Hand he succeeded in convincing hard core jazz critics that even as a straight ahead jazz man he was an alto player who couldn't and shouldn't be ignored.
