The 20-year-old Amsterdam based French horn player Morris Kliphuis won the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours 2006 with his own composition, a personal musical approach and an uncommon jazz instrument. The performance of his trio in the finals was beautiful and enthralling. The prize he won consisted of an appearance at this North Sea Jazz Festival. Kliphuis started out as a classical horn player, but nowadays he's very active as a jazz horn player and a composer of classical music. He's one of the very few improvising horn players in The Netherlands and from 2005 he's been the only one in Holland taking a jazz horn course with saxophonist Ferdinand Povel at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Kliphuis plays in several groups, including his own MK6, Duo Kliphuis-Estoppey and Antiphon Trio.
