Like so many of us singer and keyboardist
Dr. John was very upset by the havoc caused by the devastating hurricane Katrina. He showed his compassion with the disaster’s victims by recording a CD with his band
Lower 911, of which all proceeds will go to victimized musicians.
Sippiana Hericane’s theme is an obvious one: the water and New Orleans. Although he doesn’t live there any more – Dr. John lives in New York – he succeeds in returning to the tragedy with nostalgia and melancholy. Mac Rebbenack, a.k.a. Dr. John, made a name for himself as one of the representatives of Latin and funk tinged variety of New Orleans r&b. The Night Tripper – that’s his moniker – started his career in the fifties. He started out on guitar, but after a shooting incident he made the change to piano and organ. Many of us know this great artist from his first groundbreaking album,
Gris-Gris from ’68, a melting pot of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.
