Trumpet veteran Kenny Wheeler disposes over a great range and a velvety, soft tone; he's equally at home in fiery free jazz as in softer, more lyrical post bop explorations. The Canadian trumpeter and flugelhorn player made a name for himself as a solo artist with his almost poetical jazz recordings for ECM and was a one time member of the Dave Holland Quintet. On North Sea Jazz he'll perform with the trio of pianist Kenny Werner. He's known for his predilection for the trio format. For years the New Yorker led an acclaimed trio with bassist Ratzo Harris and drummer Tom Rainey. Nowadays he leads a group with bassist Johannes Weidenmuller and drummer Ari Hoenig. Furthermore he regularly plays with his quintet and he also performs a lot with his good friend Toots Thielemans. The British vocalist Norma Winstone will also join the band. She is known for her remarkable, wordless improvisations. Like no other she knows how to handle free interpretations and to provide instrumental scores with a voice. At the 2001 BBC Jazz Awards she was declared 'best female vocalist'. The Wheeler/Winstone collaboration dates from way back. At the end of the seventies she co-led the formation Azimuth with pianist John Taylor. Later this year Winstone's CD with the North German Radio Bigband will be released.
