Pierre Courbois celebrated his 40th anniversary as a jazz drummer. As a thirteen-year-old he started out on the banjo and the guitar. Later he couldn’t resist the temptation of trying his hand at the drums. Courbois is a drummer who will never provide a simple beat. There’s always something new to discover in his drum kit and over the years he’s come up with a lot of extras. At the end of the sixties Courbois fell under the spell of electronics and together with the very young keyboard player Jasper van 't Hof he started the band New Association PC. At first their music wasn’t very well received in the Netherlands, so for years they especially performed abroad. Since 1992 Courbois has only performed with ensembles under his own name executing only original compositions of the leader. With his
Five-Fourth Sextet he presents pieces that were all built around the fascinating, odd 5/4 meter. We all know Brubeck’s
Take Five, but what will it sound like when Courbois will play 5/4 interpretations of ballads, blues, swing and jazz-rock?
