She topped the charts of her native Curaçao for months with the traditionals on her album
Krioyo. With her crystal-clear voice she sings songs of praise about the Antilles. Singer
Izaline Calister explores old traditionals of Curaçao which are soaked in overseas influences. She has a mission, because by adapting traditional music she keeps the music alive. She’s known as a jazz singer, but her previous album Krioyo and her latest album
Kanta Hélele clearly are roots records. The German world-label Network gave her cart blanche, so Calister opted for typical Antillean music like tumba, seú, danza, muzik di zumbi and tambú. Together with her band - guitar, bass, piano, double percussion and back-up vocals - she explores the frontiers of renewal. The authentic percussion instruments (Jew’s harp, koebel, various metal scrape and rasp elements) augment eloquence.
