The Senegalese singer Cheick Lô was born in Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso and received a trilingual education: the Malinese bambara, the Senegalese Wolof and French. Ever since he was a kid he has been fascinated with anything that had to do with music. He taught himself to play the drums and the guitar. At 21 Lô was able to become a percussionist in the local Orchestra Volta Jazz. In Dakar he played the drums in the band of singer Ouza for a long time and he also worked as a singer and drummer in the house band of a luxury hotel. He also worked as a studio musician in Paris. It was Youssou N’Dour who gave Lô a helping hand by producing the albums Né La Thiass and Bambay Gueej. Recently his new CD Lamp Fall was released on the World Circuit label. On there Lô plays guitar, drum and percussion and with his beautiful, mysterious voice he sings in Wolof. Besides his African roots flamenco, jazz and Cuban en Brazilian influences can be heard.
