Singer Jhelisa Anderson, daughter of a well known radio host in Louisville, Kentucky, left her hometown when she was eighteen to try her luck in Los Angeles. For a while she worked as a receptionist at Motown Records. Later she crossed the Atlantic and moved to London, where she started singing in bands such as The Shamen, a group that was taking part in the eighties rave culture. Eclectic artists like Prince and Chaka Kahn heavily influenced her. Just like her sister Carleen Anderson,
Jhelisa was also was very much drawn to different sorts of music: soul, gospel and jazz, especially when she got introduced with jazz via musicians such as Greg Osby and Courtney Pine. Meanwhile the singer has made her third solo album:
A Primitive Guide to "Being There". This album is strongly influenced by her experiences with hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans. Jhelisa too lost her house and even a part of her new work. The lyrics which she finalized in Atlanta are critical and with concern for social aspects.
