Trumpeter, composer and music educator Wadada Leo Smith’s career spans more than thirty years. As an improviser Smith has studied various musical cultures including Japan, Indonesia and Africa. He is known for his theories about jazz and world music and creative music notation system ‘Ankhrasmation’. He still teaches music and furthermore he composes music for various ensembles and orchestras. As a trumpeter he is considered an adventurer who most of the time can be found in the realm of the avant-garde. He added Wadada to his real name Leo Smith when he became a Rastafari at the beginning of the eighties. He has made two CD’s with the electro-acoustic Golden Quartet. Not long ago the line-up of the band was changed: guitarist Woody Aplanalp, bassist John Lindberg and drummer Nasheet Waits.
