Thanks to this unique project the music of the legendary fusion band Weather Report can be heard again in a live situation. The compositions and arrangements Joe Zawinul wrote for Weather Report, the band he co-led with fellow legend Wayne Shorter, have become standards that belong to the international jazz canon. The Pieces that Zawinul and Shorter composed for their famous quartet, have been especially rearranged for big band rendition. Worth mentioning is the fact that former Weather Report drummer Alex Acuña will be present as the percussionist of the WDR Big Band. Zawinul is one of the most original and productive composers and arrangers the sixties have produced. He was the composer of classic compositions, often associated with artists who made them popular, like Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and Birdland and thanks to his capable hands instruments like electric pianos and analogue synthesizers became full-fledged jazz instruments. In Weather Report it was not the soloist, but the band as a whole, that shone in the spotlight. Zawinul created, for the first time since the early music of New Orleans, a space for collective improvisation.
