This Assignment is annually granted to a young and promising Dutch jazz composer, who is allowed the maximum of freedom in writing the composition(s), plus the opportunity to perform the piece(s) with a line-up of his/her choice. The Composition Assignment is a project of the North Sea Jazz Festival in cooperation with the Jazzorganisatie (Dutch Jazz Organization) and Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst (Fund for Creative Music). Joost Buis. Buis, leader of the Astronotes magically turns beautiful melodies into sophisticated arrangements, which, due to a careful process of deconstruction, lead to free improvisation. And vice versa. Buis performed in practically each and every renowned orchestra of the Dutch impro scene (ICP Orchestra, Corrie en de Brokken, Willem Breuker Kollektief) and is a great admirer of fellow musician Wolter Wierbos. But, more over, it is the music of Sun Ra that runs like a thread through Joost Buis’ musical world.
