It was just a matter of time before the young, versatile pianist from Houston,
Robert Glasper, would be noticed by a major record company. The fact that it was to be Blue Note was remarkable. The label hadn’t contracted an instrumentalist for five years. Glasper had his jazz education at the New School University in New York with a grant. Soon the pianist was noticed and from 2001 he played with Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton and Kenny Garrett. His debut album
Mood was released on the independent label Fresh Sound New Talent.
On Canvas, the CD he recorded for Blue Note, the classic jazz formation piano, bass and drums rules. Next to that he also is well known in the New York R&B and hiphop scene. He was the leader of soul singer Bilal’s band and performed with renowned rappers like Mos Def and Q-Tip.
