In 2003 two American top musicians, trumpeter
Randy Brecker and saxophonist
Bill Evans, united forces in a fusion band that picked up where the renowned Brecker Brothers left off at the time. On the live registration of last year’s extensive European tour
Soulbop Band Live, the mix of jazz funk and bop sounded deliciously fat. The all-star line-up, besides Brecker and Evans including guitarist Hiram Bullock, keyboard player Dave Kikoski and drummer Rodney Holmes, represents a groovy , not to be ignored, fusion cocktail. Randy Brecker, saxophonist Michael Brecker’s older brother, started his career in the groundbreaking band Blood, Sweat & Tears. After a straight ahead jazz period in the bands of Horace Silver and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, he started the jazz rock band Dreams with his brother Michael – a warming-up for the Brecker Brothers band, a unit that would be born in 1974. Brecker’s co-leader Bill Evans can boast a shining career in Miles Davis’ and John McLaughlin’s bands.
