Torun Eriksen is a new Norwegian vocal talent with a remarkable black voice originating from pianist Bugge Wesseltoft’s Jazzland stables. Eriksen had been singing in a gospel choir since she was six and didn’t stop until she, at nineteen, had acquired the position of first soloist. Subsequently she sang in various bands until she replaced Sidsel Endresen, the renowned Norwegian singer whom she owes a lot, in the group Chipahua. When Bugge Wesseltoft heard her singing the song
Glittercard, he offered her, just because of that one song, a record deal. Eriksen surrounded herself with musicians, who were prepared to subordinate their skills to the repertoire that can be heard on
Prayers & Observations, and the rest of the story is, as they say, history.
