Since the release of her impressive debut album
A Change Is Gonna Come, named after Sam Cooke’s hit,
Leela James’s career really took flight. Since its release the singer has performed in big television shows like the
Soul Train Award Show, and her songs get regular airplay on all music radio stations. Her music, that she describes as ‘back porch soul’ (because it is a rough and honest style that makes her reminisce of the warm summer days of her youth, when they used to sing and play the blues on the porch) is impressive. Her powerful voice displays all colors in the varied rhythm & blues, funk, soul and gospel repertoire. The L.A. born and raised singer initially envisaged a career as a sprinter but a knee injury made an end to that dream and thus James consecrated more time to music. Her father brought her up with the music of B.B. King, Al Green and Marvin Gaye, but since she sang in the local church, she was also interested in gospel.
