Madeleine Peyroux‘s voice quality, timing and phrasing is so close to Billie Holliday’s sound and style, that it’s almost creepy. As for her album Careless Love, the long awaited successor of her debut Dreamland from ten years back, the Holiday fan will be in two minds. This is because the American Peyroux, who grew up in France, sounds more sensual than ever before. For example in Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love; her intimate feather-light songs take you by the hand. Peyroux started singing at the age of fifteen and for a long period of time she performed as a street-musician in Paris. With groups such as the Riverboat Shufflers and The Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band she traveled around the world. She was noticed in a club in New York and she was offered a record deal. In The Netherlands her CD Careless Love is one of the best selling jazz CD’s. Peyroux presents her repertoire of pop and jazz classics and French chansons with her trio. Her new CD is due at the end of this year.
