Since 1967 tenor saxophonist Emillio Castillo has been the indisputable leader of the immense popular live act Tower of Power. At first he called his band The Motowns, but after baritone saxophonist Stephen ‘Doc’ Kupka joined the band, the name was changed in Tower of Power. At the beginning of the seventies the two albums they recorded for Warner, Bump City and Tower of Power, generated just as many hit singles. Although the rhythm sections and vocalists came and went, TOP’s horn section miraculously stuck together. Over the years many great names from the international music world used TOP as a backup band. Elton John, Santana, Bonnie Raitt and Toto are just a few names of the numerous acts that showed a preference for the dynamics of this flexible swinging funk machine. It’s marvelous that TOP, after forty years of activity, is still touring around the world with huge successes.
