John Hollenbeck & Jazz Big Band Graz are specialized in mixing minimal music with modern jazz. The American drummer John Hollenbeck found in Jazz Big Band Graz the perfect partner to make his musical ideas resound. In the first place the band is a regular big band with horns and a rhythm section, but it is also comprised of broad-minded musicians, who are prepared to explore the worlds outside jazz. Hollenbeck doesn’t shy away from comparing his band, as far as their skills are concerned, to the Art Orchestra of Vienna. But he prefers not comparing the music he writes for the orchestra to anything at all: “For a major part my music is free of any style or genre label”, he states. “The music speaks for itself and leaves freedom to the listener to make their own discoveries.”
