Charles Stepney used to be a renowned writer and producer especially known for his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramsey Lewis and his wife Minnie Ripperton. Stepney was also responsible for the sound of Terry Callier, who has achieved a cult status among soul lovers and recently made his comeback. He has a marvellous voice, has been making music for forty years and knows like no other how to merge blues with soul and folk.
The hip collective of deejays and producers Jazzanova from Berlin excel in remix projects and release their own music. Invited by Blue Note Jazzanova mixed the latest compilation in the Blue Note Trip series. The Amsterdam based Dox Orchestra, with members of SFeQ like Bar Suèr, met Jazzanova at the Montreux Festival in '02. Since that meeting both groups have been exchanging music and ideas. And guess what: both collectives had independently decided to initiate a project highlighting the legacy of Charles Stepney. This project will be premiered at North Sea Jazz. The Zapp! string quartet has been contracted for the string charts. The group has made a name for itself as one of Holland's most wilful and swinging string quartets. Thus they combine effortlessly jazz, rock, free improvisation and world music in a swinging grooving performance.
