On the occasion of his birthday Trumpeter and flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen will receive a lot of praise this year. Let's not forget for how long this man has made a contribution to Dutch jazz. Ack van Rooyen, born in The Hague on New Year's Day 1930, has put a long list of jazz highlights to his name. Together with his brother - the arranger and conductor Jerry van Rooyen - went to the infamous 52nd Street in New York and brought jazz back to The Netherlands. He used to play in orchestras and big bands in France and Germany and toured with international jazz greats including the Gil Evans Orchestra and Clark Terry. Nowadays he teaches at the Royal Conservatory, performs regularly with the Dutch Jazz Orchestra and The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and often takes part in projects of bassist Tony Overwater. To celebrate his 75th birthday at North Sea Ack van Rooyen has invited nothing but European musicians.
