Even when John Birks ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie was developing bebop together with Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, the trumpeter always had a big band up his sleeve. Dizzy just couldn’t put all his qualities as a composer-arranger in the smaller bands he worked with. In 1945 he toured with a big band that a year later would become The Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra. Up to his death in 1993 Dizzy fronted, off and on, big bands. A few years after the demise of the bebop pioneer trombone player Slide Hampton and bassist John Lee decided to keep Dizzy’s big band dream alive. From that moment on Hampton and Lee front the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band. James Moody is the star on tenor saxophone and trumpeter Roy Hargrove modestly but impressively fills the shoes of one of the greatest musicians that jazz has produced. Other names in the line-up that shouldn’t go unmentioned are Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath (both saxophone) and Claudio Roditi (trumpet).
