The 80-year old Roy Haynes is often refered to as ‘the father of modern drumming’, and it is said that grandmasters like Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette copied his skills. Haynes himself learned from bebop pioneers such as Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and hard bopper Art Blakey. Haynes is a man who has seen it all: he played with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and so on. However Haynes shows no signs of tiredness at all, check out his latest album Fountain of Youth that received favourable reviews by the international jazz press. The drummer, who has been swinging hard since his debut in 1944, proves on the live CD that he still is a good, and especially, an energetic band leader. And: Haynes is still gifted with that magical rhythmic feel!
