Hearing the word gypsy jazz one automatically thinks of guitars or violins. But gypsy brass orchestras exist too. The band Koçani Orkestar is an example of such a ‘gypsy’ brass band. The band started out as a local brass band that compiled musical traditions from east to west and made it into an attractive mix. The big breakthrough was the result of a performance in the movie Cingene Domani. After that tours followed through Europe and the rest of the world. In one respect Koçani Orkestar has remained a local band. Not just anybody can join the orchestra: there is a strict policy. Only family members or friendly neighbors stand a chance.
