It won’t be the first time that trombone player Roswell Rudd and saxophonist Archie Shepp share the same stage: when Rudd joined the free jazz group of trumpeter Bill Dixon in 1962 Shepp had already become a member of this epoch-making unit. Because the fast and nervous bebop music wasn’t really a suitable genre for an intonation-wise less accurate instrument like the trombone, Rudd’s talent was shown to full advantage in free jazz. There he could experiment with sounds and emotions to his heart’s content. Shepp too wanted to achieve more than virtuoso playing in that period: in his hands the saxophone had sooner become a political weapon, with which he wanted to give a voice to the anger of the suppressed black community. It will be really exciting to hear what these two veterans will have to tell us in a different epoch.
