In the year 2001 the Dutch Jazz Orchestra started a project that the band called The Impressionists. That project highlighted American jazz-composers who worked for the orchestras of Claude Thornhill and Boyd Raeburn. Those composers - a.o. Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan – applied the harmonic concepts of French composers such as Debussy and Ravel to jazz pieces for big bands. At North Sea 2005 the Dutch Jazz Orchestra will play compositions from the repertoire of saxophonist Boyd Raeburn with special guests clarinettist Buddy Defranco and vocalist Lydia van Dam. By 1945 Raeburn led an orchestra that was way ahead of its time playing the most radical arrangements of that period, for the greater part written by John Handy. Buddy De Franco was one of the soloists the band featured. Vocalists had to stand firm while the orchestra behind them was playing daring discords.
