The German (and Roma gypsy) DJ Shantel (real name: Stefan Hantel) established his name by mixing traditional folk music from the Balkan Mountains with dance beats. At first he made sultry trip hop, but after visiting Bucovina, the province in Rumania where his grandparents came from, he completely lost himself in the music of the Balkan region. What he had heard of this music on CD, didn’t make a big impression. But the sounds and rhythms of his grandparents that were now presented to him live, touched him deeply. That love and passion can be heard on Bucovina Club, a CD that for instance was awarded rightly in France with the most prestigious price for world music. The Bucovina Club Orkestar is a 12-piece traditional orchestra with strings and horns.
