Through the years Luc Houtkamp has made a transition from a free jazz tenor and alto saxophonist, who was always searching for the perfect synthesis between composition and improvisation, to a jazz wizard on the computer. As a self-taught man on the saxophone and in the realm of music software he created his own style thanks to what he calls ‘the power of restrictions’. “You develop in a different way when you have to think of solutions yourself”, Houtkamp once said in an interview. The musician, renowned for his technical prowess on the saxophone - double tones, slap tongue and circular breathing – was rewarded the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize for his oeuvre. With the POW Ensemble, founded in 2001, he works with a large computer network on stage. The instruments are hooked up and exchange information. One computer reacts to what another one has come up with and a form of digital improvisation has come alive. In this performance POW collaborates with tap dancer Marije Nie
