With bassist Charnett Moffett, drummer Eric Gravatt and saxophonists Gary Bartz and Ravi Coltrane, legendary pianist McCoy Tyner has brought a true All Star band to The Hague. Tyner grew up in Philadelphia. As a teenager he sometimes performed in bars and there he met John Coltrane. Finally Tyner became world famous because of his important role in Coltrane’s music during the sixties. He was the free piano improviser in the legendary Coltrane band with Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison, which surprised the world with all those beautiful records like My Favorite Things and Olé Coltrane. After those days, Tyner has gone in all directions. Especially in 1972 when he signed with the Milestone label and started releasing his own albums. He recorded interpretations of Ellington, Latin jazz, big band music, solo recitals, trio work – in all too much to mention. Together with Bill Evans, Tyner is one of the most influential pianists, whose chord-playing is accurately studied by young pianists.
