This year the American trumpet player Benny Bailey was programmed to play at the festival. Alas this was not to be: the extravert bebop specialist died on April 14th last. In consultation with his quartet’s Dutch musicians (Rob van Bavel, Frans van Geest and John Engels) it was decided to not to cancel the concert but to present a Tribute to Benny Bailey, in order to keep the memory of Bailey alive. In 1925 Bailey was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He started his career in the orchestra of Jay McShann. During the 40s and 50s he worked in the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton (together with Joe Wilder) and Quincy Jones. In the 60s he became a member of the legendary Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland big band. Bailey will be remembered as an explosive big band trumpeter with a perfect technique. Just like Joe Wilder the other guest horn players in this tribute will be the Dutch Ack van Rooyen (trumpet) and Ferdinand Povel (saxophone), both musicians of his generation.
