Barry Harris started playing the piano at a very early age. As a teenager in Detroit in the forties he played with musicians like Miles Davis, Max Roach and Sonny Stitt. In these days he was strongly influenced by bebop pioneers such as Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. After having moved to New York, he played with saxophonists like Cannonball Adderley and Dexter Gordon. Today Harris is still one of the preeminent bebop pianists. Next to that he has built an impressive career in jazz education. Teaching is Harris' second nature. Since the eighties he has completely dedicated himself to the Jazz Cultural Centre in New York.
