“I am not going to try to improve on Charlie Parker’s playing, but I do think I am capable to orchestrate better than they did in those days.” Alto saxophonist Phil Woods is referring to his concert Phil Woods Quartet & String Orchestra play Bird, a project in which he revives the classic Charlie Parker album Bird with Strings on stage. Immediately after Parker’s death in 1955, Woods was considered as one of the most talented heirs to the throne. Parker thought of his record with strings as the most beautiful one he had ever made, so it was obvious that one day Woods would sink his teeth in the concept. This inspired bopper rewrote the arrangements by adding more strings and reed instruments to the sound spectrum. Along with his quartet and the musicians of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague the fiftieth dying day of Bird will be commemorated in a respectful way.
