Pianist Andrew Hill has had a remarkable career. Not only did he study with the 'classical' composer Paul Hindemith, but he also played accordion and tap-danced in the streets. Earl Hines spotted him and encouraged him to pursue a professional career in music. Subsequently Hill played with all different kinds of musicians such as Paul Williams, Charlie Parker, Von Freeman and John Gilmore. When, in connection with free jazz, his contemporaries dumped all conventions in harmony and rhythm, Hill tried to fight his freedom within these parameters. Hill acknowledges he had a 'period full of anger', but at a certain point got tired of “pounding the piano. It's too good of an instrument for that.” The 17-piece big band he's now leading, distinguishes itself by unusual arrangements, in which fixed structures and anarchistic cacophonies coexist in harmony.
