The Groningen-based pianist Rein de Graaff fills a special page in the book of Dutch jazz history. Although the man has never become a professional jazz musician, there are probably few colleagues who have pursued jazz just as actively and possessed. In the 80’s and the 90’s, when he presented concerts called ‘A crash-course in bebop’ he invited a lot of forgotten Americans to the Netherlands. In 2002, during the Blue Concept Concert he paid tribute to the almost forgotten composer and saxophonist Gigi Gryce. Gryce was a capable alto player but became known for his exceptional compositions. His career was restricted to the fifties. At the beginning of the sixties he stopped playing and he disappeared into the world of music education. During the concert The Music of Gigi Gryce Herb Geller will play the alto saxophone and John Marshall the trumpet.
