The hip twelve-piece orchestra Pink Martini is something in between a Cuban dance orchestra from the thirties, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian brass band and Japanese film noir. The band, that comes from Portland - Oregon, was founded by pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale and presents a selection of jazz and chansons, taken from countries far away but also from places close to home. Music for every occasion, as Lauderdale states. The album Sympathique from 1997 was a big hit to everyone’s surprise. Now there is Hang On Little Tomato, the new CD that contains French, Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Spanish and English songs.
