Even before the singer and piano player Andy Bey had turned 18 he had already shared the stage of the Apollo Theatre in Harlem with the likes of Louis Jordan, Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Not bad, even for a child prodigy. At the end of the fifties he founded together with his sisters the vocal trio Andy & The Bey Sisters, an act he performed with in Paris and other European cities. In the next twenty years to follow Bey didn’t only play with Horace Silver, Gary Bartz and McCoy Tyner, but he also found the time to be a vocal teacher in Austria. Andy Bey is without the shadow of a doubt the most underestimated vocalist of jazz history, although he has always had a multitude of fans that have remained faithful to him throughout the years.
