Hardbop tenor saxophonist David Schnitter is a veteran who paid his dues in the bands of Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard. During the workshops of Barry Harris he met the Dutch pianist Edgar van Asselt, who is composer and bandleader of the band Major League. Van Asselt studied at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, where he took lessons with Frans Elsen and Rob van Kreeveld. He also studied in New York with Fred Hersch and Kenny Werner. Recently the David Schnitter-Edgar van Asselt Quartet released a debut CD with, considering their intercontinental collaboration, the striking title: Penpals. Underpinned by Wim Kegel (drums) and Erik Robaard (bas) not only new variations of well-known standards can be heard, but also originals.
